2. What Isoniazid is and what is it used for:
Isoniazid is used mainly in the treatment of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. It is used in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis, but it appears to be effective also in the treatment of extrapulmonary lesions, including meningitis and genitourinary disease.
3. Warnings and Precautions:
Isoniazid should be administered with caution to patients with convulsive disorders, a history of psychosis, or hepatic or renal dysfunction. Patients who are diabetic, alcoholic, uremic, or pregnant women should receive pyridoxine 10 mg daily.
4. Possible Side Effects:
The possible side effects of Isoniazid are:
- Peripheral neuropathy.
- Constipation.
- Difficulty in starting urination.
- Dryness of mouth.
- Vertigo and hyperreflexia.
It may be troublesome with doses of 10 mg per kg body weight. The onset of peripheral neuritis should be expected with a dose of 10 mg per kg body weight, and a prophylactic dose of 100 mg pyridoxine HCL should be given daily. Although Isoniazid usually has a mood-elevating effect, mental disturbances, ranging from minor personality changes to major mental derangement, have been reported; these are usually reversed on withdrawal of the drug. Withdrawal symptoms, which may occur on the cessation of treatment, include headache, insomnia, and nervousness.
