1. Dosage:
- Each tablet contains 4 mg of chlorpheniramine maleate.
2. What Antihist is and what is it used for:
The active ingredient is chlorpheniramine maleate, an antihistamine which can help to relieve the symptoms of some allergies, rhinitis, and itchy skin rashes, it can be used to treat itchiness, redness, swelling, and irritation that can be caused by hay fever and other allergies (e.g. pet, dust mite, and mould spore), skin allergies and dermatitis, prickly heat and heat rash, insect bites and stings, and the itchy rash of chickenpox.
3. Warnings and Precautions:
Do not take chlorpheniramine maleate if you:
- Are allergic to chlorpheniramine maleate or other antihistamines.
- Are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you:
- Have epilepsy.
- Have liver, kidney, heart disease, or severe high blood pressure.
- Have bronchitis, asthma, or bronchiectasis.
- Have an enlarged prostate gland.
- Have glaucoma.
Do not drink alcohol, dive or operate machinery whilst taking chlorpheniramine maleate.
Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines.
Ask your doctor for advice before taking chlorpheniramine maleate if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
4. Dose:
- Adults and children over 12 years: one tablet every 4-6 hours. Do not take more than 6 tablets in 24 hours.
- Children aged 6-12 years: half a tablet every 4-6 hours. Do not give more than 6 half tablets in 24 hours.
- Elderly: Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine as you may be more likely to get side effects including confusion and need a lower daily dose.
5. Possible Side Effects:
Chlorpheniramine maleate like all medicines can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Children and the elderly are likely to be more sensitive to the effects of chlorpheniramine maleate. The most common side effect is drowsiness and there are other side effects like headache, dry mouth, diarrhoea, indigestion, loss of appetite, aches and pains in the stomach area, weakness, low blood pressure, skin rash, sensitivity to sunlight, dizziness, tightness of the chest, and muscle weakness.
